Conference organised by the
Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) in collaboration with the University
of Hamburg and the German Federal Ministry of Education. Bologna is
transcending the EHEA’s borders, and enhancing Europe’s
attractiveness is gaining ever more importance as a vital driving
force behind the Bologna Process. Nevertheless, no major international
conference has addressed the issue as a separate theme.
The Academic Cooperation Association is organising the two-day conference
„Opening up to the Wider World: The External Dimension of the
Bologna Process“, on 18 and 19 October 2004 at the University
of Hamburg, in Germany. The conference will host ca. 250 participants,
and is designed for an open debate. The event targets representatives
from higher education institutions, national rectors’ conferences;
national/regional governments and European institutions; European
and international intergovernmental organisations and higher education
associations.
Among the speakers that ACA has been able to win for the conference
are the following internationally renowned experts: Peter Scott (ACA
President, Kingston University, UK), Peter van der Hijden (European
Commission), Christian Tauch (German Rectors’ Conference), Sjur
Bergan (Council of Europe), Rolf Hoffmann (German Fulbright Commission),
Pieter van Dijk (NUFFIC), Ulrich Teichler (University of Kassel),
Catharine Stimpson (New York University), Tony Adams (Macquarie University),
and Salvador Malo (CENEVAL).
Please visit our website for more information about the conference
programme, practicalities (accommodation, transport, etc.) and the
social programme at www.aca-secretariat.be/08events/HamburgConferenceOverview.
Conference Fee
The conference fee for early registration until 17 September is
295 Euros for non ACA-members and 240 Euros for ACA members. The
fee covers participation in the conference, all conference materials,
the welcome reception, the conference dinner and lunches, and all
refreshments during the breaks. The fee for accompanying persons
is €60. This fee includes participation in the conference dinner
and the welcome reception only.
There is a separate fee of €25 for the guided tour of Hamburg
on Sunday afternoon, 17 October.

'Multilingualism and External Affairs', Generaldirektion Dolmetschen,
Europäische Kommission (SCIC)). Einen weiteren Hauptvortrag
hält Frau Prof. Dr. Barbara Moser-Mercer (École de Traduction
et d'Interprétation, Genf) am 22.10.2004. Zu neuen Berufsbildern
referieren Mary Caroll (TITELBILD Subtitling and Translation GmbH,
Berlin), Prof. Dr. Sylvia Kalina ((AIIC), Fachhochschule Köln),
Manfred Schmitz (Intertext Fremdsprachendienst e.G., Berlin) und
Prof. Dr. Klaus Schubert (Fachhochschule Flensburg). Die Rolle der
Terminologie beim Fachübersetzen beleuchten Prof. Dr. Peter
A. Schmitt ( Universität Leipzig) und Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dirk
Schmitz (Fachhochschule Köln). Über die Herausforderungen
des 'institutionellen' Übersetzens berichten Reinhard Hoheisel
(Generaldirektion Übersetzung, Europäische Kommission)
und Klemens Kröther (Bundessprachenamt). Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz
Stoll (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz/Germersheim) perspektiviert
neue Entwicklungen in der Lehre.
Eine öffentliche Podiumsdiskussion zum
Thema 'Globalisierung und Multilingualismus: Wozu brauchen wir (noch)
das Übersetzen und Dolmetschen?' rundet den Kongress ab und
akzentuiert politische Dimensionen des Berufs in Praxis und Lehre.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on SENSE IN TRANSLATION
Ecole Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs –
ESIT, Université Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle
This symposium will bring together researchers from various fields
– linguists, translation scientists, philosophers – and
also practitioners of interpretation and translation, to see how different
views of sense converge – or perhaps diverge. Speakers will
naturally develop the subject from their own specific viewpoint, but
conclusions should be of relevance for translation research and for
professional practice

Second call for papers
Information and communication technologies have had a tremendous
impact on the translation profession in recent years. To ensure
the success of their graduates, translation schools and translator
training programmes must come to grips with this trend and meet
the professional challenge. Finding and developing suitable, user-
friendly applications need not be costly. This conference focuses
on methodological procedures in translator training which make innovative
use of affordable technological tools.
The organisers are looking for papers and workshops to be presented
on issues relating to technological innovation. The spectrum of
submissions may include:
- Experiences in digitalisation.
- Use of free or affordable software.
- Computer-assisted translation.
- Experiences in e-learning.
- Using e-documents.
- Virtual learning environments.
- Electronic portfolios.
- Terminology storage and management.
- Data gathering.
- Using computer resources for translator training in the context
of the European Framework for Higher Education.
Papers may be submitted in two forms: 1) 20-minute presentations
followed by time for questions from the audience; 2) electronic
submissions (which may include sound and video) to be viewed at
the conference (time for questions may be allowed if the author
is present). All papers must be submitted in Catalan, Spanish
or English. Simultaneous interpeting will be provided at the conference.
The organisers will select papers for e-publication in the final
proceedings of the conference.

TRADUIRE LES SCIENCES HUMAINES : METHODES ET
ENJEUX - ACIE (UNIVERSITE DE ROUEN)
APPEL A COMMUNICATIONS
sera
bien sûr examinée.
Date limite pour les propositions : 15 décembre 2005

Bridging
Cultures through Language Interchange
6th Symposium on Translation, Terminology and Interpretation
in Cuba and Canada Havana, December 5 and 6, 2006
In an era when different forms of globalization are the subject
of much debate, the coexistence of cultures is already part of
the daily reality in many countries. The languages of the various
cultures may play a major or minor role on the world stage: some
languages are more likely to be translated than others; some have
a longstanding tradition of translation into their language and
others very little; and still others may only be translated into
a major language via a third language. But all of them, to a greater
or lesser extent, are bridges to other cultures.
Translation, interpretation and terminology serve as a bridge
between cultures and can be adapted to fit any given situation.
It is from this perspective that we call on colleagues from around
the world to give some thought to important issues such as the
type of ties that can be established among cultures with major
or minor languages, those that coexist within the same country,
those that have recently arrived in a country, and those with
different historical and political underpinnings. What are the
rights of speakers of indigenous languages to be heard in their
mother tongue? How does domestic legislation treat language rights?
How does one meet the challenge of multilingualism within a multicultural
community? What role do language professionals play in defending
their culture? And to what extent do language professionals assume
the role of "mediators" in this context? These are only
some of the issues that will be discussed at the 6th Symposium,
in an effort to maintain our well-established tradition of research
into language-related matters.
The Canadian Translators and Interpreters Council (CTIC) and
the Cuban Association of Translators and Interpreters (ACTI) invite
you to participate in the discussions to be held on December 5
and 6, 2006 at the Capitol in Havana as part of the 6th Symposium
on Translation, Terminology and Interpretation in Cuba and Canada.
This meeting is the sixth in a series that both parties have
been organizing every two years since 1996, initially within the
framework of a cooperation agreement between the Instituto de
Información Científica y Tecnológica (IDICT)
and the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes
du Québec (OTTIAQ).
Beginning with the fifth edition in 2004, ACTI and CTIC took over
the organizational reins, in accordance with a new agreement signed
at the 2002 meeting.
All those who work in the language field - professionals, researchers,
members of professional associations or other related occupations
– and who wish to present a paper at the symposium should
forward a summary of no more than 250 words to the organizing
committee at the e-mail addresses indicated below before May 31,
2006. The committee will study the proposals and respond to the
authors before July 31, 2006. A preliminary program is expected
to be ready for distribution in September, with the final program
being released a few weeks prior to the scheduled meeting date.
All those interested in attending the symposium should include
their names on the pre-registration mailing list upon receiving
this correspondence. As more information becomes available (program,
precise dates, accommodation, etc.), it will be e-mailed to those
whose names appear on the list. The registration fee for the symposium
is $180 CDN, payable by credit card (as of a date to be specified)
or in cash at the Havana Capitol the day prior to the opening
of the symposium.
Please forward this invitation to your colleagues – translators,
terminologists and interpreters – as well as to your professional
associations and orders, so that it reaches as many people as
possible. As always, the discussions on these subjects that are
so dear to our hearts will be more enriching if we have a large
number of participants from diverse and representative backgrounds.
We look forward to seeing you in Havana in December 2006.

*** NEW – NEU – NEW – NEU *** ACA's
annual conference 2007: The Many Faces of Internationalisation
Berlin 13 – 15 May 2007
In cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
and the German- American Fulbright Commission
Berlin is the place, and “internationalisation” is the
theme of next year’s ACA Annual Conference. Once a marginal
concern, suitable at best for Sunday speeches, internationalisation
of higher education has moved centre stage. But the increasing centrality
of internationalisation has gone hand-in- glove with a blurring
of its meaning. This is why it is time to revisit the theme, to
analyse the many concepts and meanings it has today, and to create
an overview of its practice in different parts of the world. This
is what the conference aims to achieve.
The Many Faces of Internationalisation will be held in a mixture
of plenary sessions and workshops, and will use a wide variety
of presentation and discussion formats. Speakers and panellists
will be the leading theorists and practitioners in internationalisation
from Europe and elsewhere in the world. The conference is expected
to draw an audience of 300 policy makers and practitioners. Registrations
will start in January 2007. Mark the date in your diary and check
the ACA website for updates.

in englischer Sprache an.
Fragen hierzu beantwortet Martin Stettner, Tel. 0711/65704-52

The Brazilian Association of Translation Researchers
(ABRAPT) & the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP) present:
10th BRAZILIAN TRANSLATION FORUM & 4th INTERNATIONAL
TRANSLATION FORUM
Along the paths of translation: where are we heading? The
enormous growth of the discipline Translation Studies in the last
30 to 40 years has led to its expansion into different specialities,
encompassing disparate subareas such as Audiovisual Translation,
Corpora Studies, Translation Teaching, Terminology, Intercultural
Studies, Competence- and Expert-Performance-Oriented Studies, Textual
and Cognitive Approaches, Historiography, Localization, to name
just a few.
This Conference will discuss the following questions: What are the
core concepts which link these subareas under the umbrella term
of Translation Studies?
Have they followed very different paths with their own theoretical
bases and methodologies?
Have we reached a level of expansion that calls for a reformulation
of the long-sought-for unity of Translation Studies?
The Brazilian Association of Translation Researchers (ABRAPT), after
rebuilding its own paths, is once again bringing together Translation
Studies researchers at the 4th International Translation Forum in
Brazil. With the support of the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto
(UFOP), this Conference will be held in the town of Ouro Preto,
a world heritage site, where culture, literature, history and architecture
provide the setting for the debates on the paths of translation.
The Conference will cover the following subareas of Translation
Studies:
1. Intercultural Studies 2. Historiography 3. Audiovisual Translation
and Accessibility 4. Translation Technologies 5. Teaching, Evaluation,
and Accreditation 6. Translation and Psychoanalysis 7. Corpora
Studies 8. Cognitive and Expert-Performance Approaches to Translation

Kinship Terminologies: Change and Reconstruction
Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands
This is a call for preliminary expressions of interest in presenting
a paper at the Kinship workshop to be held as part of the XIXth
International Conference on Historical Linguistics.
Call for Papers
Study of kinship terminologies and systems has been one of the
major joint endeavours of comparative linguistics and the social
sciences, especially anthropology. Reconstruction of prehistoric
systems has shed light on the form of the societies of proto-language
speakers and the changes leading to present-day societies. In
turn the systematic study of the typology of, and constraints
on, kinship systems in anthropology has assisted linguists in
their reconstruction work. While kinship, particularly diachronic
kinship, has become unfashionable in anthropology in the last
20-30 years, it is now experiencing a renaissance, with new publications
appearing often drawing on linguistic evidence. There is also
significant interest in history in documented kinship changes
in Europe and elsewhere, and this provides a more detailed source
about transitions in meanings and their motivations which can
aid in reconstruction. We are calling for papers on examples of
reconstruction of proto-terminologies in families and sub-groups;
change in morphology, semantics and usage, and borrowing of terms,
whether based on prehistoric reconstructions or written sources.
Papers on theoretical and methodological issues, especially addressing
the interdisciplinary nature of this field, are also welcomed.
Please send your name and affiliation and a short indication
of your area or interest and/or the topic of a possible paper
in the Kinship workshop to Patrick.mcconvell@anu.edu.au. This
is simply so that the workshop organizers can get an idea of who
might be contributing, and so that we can keep those who have
been in touch informed of any developments. In due course there
will be a formal abstract submission process through the conference
website but that is not implemented yet.

CFP Literature, Geography, Translation: The New Comparative
Horizons
Uppsala University
Comparative literature is currently undergoing critical changes.
Transnational and global paradigms of study are emerging to supplant
the disciplines earlier Eurocentric framework; circulation, translation,
postcolonialism and world literature? have become the focus of overlapping
debates which expand the horizon of literary studies.
The complexity of these theoretical and methodological developments
should not be underestimated, however. While the globe? may be
an enticing frame of reference, no one, as Gayatri Spivak reminds
us,
actually lives there. Or, as Franco Moretti argues, the concept
of world literature? may have have been with us for two centuries,
but we still dont know what it is.
The warp and weft of literature as it is written, read, distributed
and translated remains the historically dense and often discordant
experiences of language, places, intellectual networks, and economic
and political inequities. It is, perhaps, only by continually
engaging this tangle of specificities that the call for global?
literary studies will prevail.
The Departments of Literature and English at Uppsala University,
in collaboration with the University of Oslo, will host a conference
in Uppsala, Sweden, on 11-13 June 2009 on this theme. Papers should
address, mutatis mutandis, each of the terms literature?, geography?
and translation? within a transnational frame.
Possible panels may include:
· Notions of world literature from Goethe to Moretti, Casanova
and Damrosch
· Postcolonial translation
· Geographies of literary translation
· Histories of literary translation
· Transnational literary networks
· Literature and the circulation of print
· The local, the national and the global in literary historiography
· Translating genres
· Place, space and geography in literature
· Translingual aesthetics

International Workshop on Terminology and Lexical Semantics
(TLS’09)
Université de Montréal - Montreal (Quebec)
CANADA
Held in conjunction with Fourth International Conference on Meaning-Text
Theory (MTT’09) June 16-18, 2009
Call for papers
Recent work on terminology processing (corpus-based or knowledge-based
terminology, computational terminology, terminography or specialized
lexicography, etc.) has shown the importance of taking into account
the linguistic aspects of terms as well as their conceptual aspects.
Linguistic aspects are often those that must be dealt with when
processing or analyzing corpora. Conceptual aspects, on the other
hand, are those that terminologists must take into account when
building knowledge representations in specific subject fields.
The weight given to each aspect depends on the theoretical model
on which a terminology project relies, its objectives or the application
for which it is developed.
Although conceptual and linguistic aspects of terms are recognized
as being necessary, less work has been carried out on their linguistic
properties and their formal representation. Which linguistic properties
should be represented? Which theoretical model is better adapted
to terminological needs? How can linguistic properties of terms
— especially lexico-semantic aspects — be implemented
in terminology applications? All these questions must be addressed
and resolved when processing specialized texts and representing
knowledge.
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers interested
in linguistic approaches — especially lexico-semantic aspects
— to the description of terms. This workshop will provide
an opportunity to discuss issues of a fundamental nature (e.g.,
the modelling of meaning or the definition of sets of lexical
relationships) as well as applied work dealing with the acquisition
of lexical aspects of terms or their representation in formal
structures.
TOPICS:
- Use of lexical semantics models (e.g. Semantic Frames, Generative
Lexicon, Explanatory Combinatorial Lexicology, Functional-Lexematic
Model) in terminological descriptions
- Combination of concept-based and lexico-semantic approaches
in terminological descriptions
- Modelling of lexical relationships (paradigmatic and syntagmatic),
specialized meaning, sense distinctions, argument structure, multilingual
terminological data
- Implementation of lexical descriptions of terms in terminological
databases, dictionaries, ontologies and other formal knowledge
representations
- Use of lexical descriptions of terms in computer applications
- Automatic or semi-automatic identification of lexical relationships,
collocations and other lexical aspects of terms in specialized
corpora
Submission deadline: March 1, 2009

Computer-Assisted Translation
January 26th to 30th, 2009 Monterey Institute of International
Studies Essential Skills for Translators
Ever heard of CAT, Trados, TEnTs? How about TM? Curious what
they are and what it means to you as a translator? In a one week,
thirty hour course, we will examine the basic characteristics and
execution of translation memory (TM) and terminology databases;
the two cornerstones of language technology for the professional
translator.
Emphasis will be placed on how these technologies assist you in
four key areas to achieve greater translation efficiency by working
smarter, not harder. Regardless of branding (Trados, SDLX, Transit,
Wordfast, etc.) or what you call them (CAT, TEnTs, etc.) all these
tools are surprisingly simple once introduced to the overlying concepts
which guide their core operation.
The course is designed to introduce the subject and develop high-intermediate
level skills in Monterey Institute Master's Degree students. This
MA level course fulfills the first year CAT requirements for our
translation and Translation/Localization students, but is open to
the qualified public. We hope to see you in Monterey!
Best wishes, Rachel Christopherson

Course Description
Designed to introduce language professionals to the critical
importance of computer-assisted translation (CAT), this MA level
course will mainly focus on the use of translation memory (TM)
and terminology management tools throughout all phases of a project
from the translator perspective. We will cover the overlying concepts
and lingo required to master any translation technology as well
as the how, why and when of using such tools. Emphasizing a hands-on
approach, class time will primarily be devoted to utilizing industry
leading CAT software products SDL Trados™ and SDLX™
in the translation of simple documentation. We will learn the
tremendous value of translation memory applications and how they
not only save the user time and money, but also reduce the tedious
and repetitive tasks associated with translation. Finally, we
will touch upon powerful, low-cost alternatives to mainstream
tools to see if they might better suit your professional needs
as well as financial means.
Professor
Jon Ritzdorf
Speaker & Instructor:
Monterey Institute of International Studies alumnus, Jon has worked
intimately with Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools for
over seven years in the translation of documentation, websites
and software for three of the ten largest translation service
providers in the world. With a decade of combined experience in
translation, localization and internationalization, more than
200 students have benefited from Jon's expert instruction as an
Adjunct Professor of translation technologies at both New York
University and Rutgers University. His simple approach to tackling
technical subjects for the average translator have been praised
for their effectiveness by students, translation instructors and
professionals alike.
