13. - 14.09. "Subtitles and Language Learning"
Pavia, Italy.

www.unipv.it/sllconf

The University of Pavia is hosting the International Conference "Subtitles and Language Learning", whose aim is to disseminate the results of a three-year project - November 2009 – November 2012 - co-financed by the EU as part of the Life Long Learning Programme managed by EACEA (European Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency - Agreement Number 2009–4041/001-001, Project Number 504737-LLP-1-2009-1-FI-KA2-KA2NW).

Since a considerable number of EU projects confirm that subtitles provide a rich context for foreign language acquisition, all European and international researchers and teachers engaged in the study of the function of subtitles in second/foreign language learning are welcome to the conference.

15. - 17.09. First International Conference on Fictional Translators in Literature and Film

We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper to the First International Conference on Fictional Translators in Literature and Film to be held at the Center of Translation Studies at the University of Vienna on 15-17 September 2011

Theme of the conference
The last few years have seen an upsurge in films and literary texts in which translators or the act of translating have a central role. One reason for this development may be that translators serve as a perfect screen for the projection of social and cultural anxieties associated with various aspects of globalization, i.e. migration, cultural hybridity, mobility, multilingualism, etc. The topic of translation has reached all literary and film genres – from dramatic works and novels to (auto)biographies, from motion pictures to documentary films – and can be found in all fields: in historical novels and films, as well as in science fiction, experimental literature and films, crime stories and comedies. In their works, writers and film directors seem to make the most of the social and political dimensions of translating practice.

Abstract proposals and deadlines
Scholars are invited to submit 200-300 word proposals (with 3 keywords) for papers in Word as an attachment with the format: authorname.doc. (Please include your contact information in the body of your e-mail, not in the file.) Abstract proposals should be sent by 15 January 2011 to: transfiction@univie.ac.at The abstracts should be attached as a WORD document, Please indicate ABSTRACT in the subject line in your e-mail.
Presentations will be 20 minutes in length, followed by discussion. There will be sessions Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Conference Languages
The languages of the conference will be English and German.

Information and Contact Details
For all correspondence about the conference please use the e-mail address: transfiction@univie.ac.at More information will be available soon from the conference website http://transfiction.univie.ac.at

Norms in translation and the translation of norms in European institutions and businesses

Europe is the world’s largest economic zone in terms of general domestic product. The European Union, however, as its most powerful economic structure with 27 member states, does not have the monopoly on all the exchanges that take place in Europe. Countries such as those of the European Free Trade Association (Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), countries of South-Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Ukraine, and several others, also participate in the exchanges within Europe. The 23 official languages of the European Union, which are determined when the states become members, are thus supplemented by other languages which also have a role to play.
The conference is organised by the Research Group on European Multilingualism (EA 1339, LiLPa), the Institute for Translators, Interpreters and International Relations (ITI-RI) at Strasbourg University and the College for Languages and Applied Human Sciences of the University of Strasbourg.

Registration fee: € 65 (payment before 31 March 2010) or € 100 (payment after 31 March 2010)
Coffee breaks and lunch are provided by the conference organisers.
Accommodation and other meals are paid for by the participants.
